With the exception of Rush, how many mainstream (films released nationwide in "standard" theaters) car films produced in the last 20-25 years can you name where the protagonist(s) doesn't commit a felony?

Well there's... wait, no... Oh! What about... nope, not that either. Hmmm...

The movies try to portray the average person's fantasy life, and that is how they do it.

It's the idea of "Robin Hood", or underdog, or vigilante doing what needs to be done when the law won't. They all go together.

If the average person's fantasy life is about armed truck hijackings, dragging bank vaults through the streets, and stealing a bunch of cars so your brother doesn't die in a car crusher than I'm even more afraid of people than I was ten minutes ago.

damnit he's right, I just re-watched cars with my 1.5 yr old.
He speed like a maniac, runs from the police, and even tries to escape imprisonment but ran out of gas on the way out of town.
DAMN

I'm going to take this a step further: With the exception of Rush, how many car films produced in the last 20-25 years didn't completely suck?
![]() 08/08/2014 at 16:58 |

Fine, I can understand that, but really does EVERY movie have to portray all car people as "Robin Hood" criminal vigilantes?
![]() 08/08/2014 at 16:59 |

You should be! That's one reason I like being around car people who take their cars to the track or Auto/RallyX. We try to live out our fantasies in a safe environment, and don't bottle them up like the rest of society.

When was Senna made?
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:01 |

Think about it like this, how good of a car movie can you make without breaking laws? You'd have to make it a movie like rush where all the driving happens on a track or else it wouldn't be entertaining at all to the average non enthusiast movie goer.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:04 |

I didn't think about documentaries. That would broaden the list a bit.

and "1"
I like that movie too.

Lol as I read this, a script is in front of me for just such a film. Filming begins Monday.

Alright, how about car movies where the protagonist doesn't commit a felony beyond speeding/moving violations?
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:06 |
|
I can only think of movies on the margin of "car" due to having a high speed chase but not being about cars: e.g. cop movies in which *cops* drive recklessly but presumably not feloniously. Other than that I'm stumped.

Sam was a spy.

Well it's not a movie, but besides tons of speeding/moving violations this seems to fit the bill. Well, I just wanted an excuse to post this..

Sam was a spy posing as a criminal.

Ummm, street racing rental cars...
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:14 |

That's why I stipulated films that got major theatrical releases. Senna was "select theaters only."
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:17 |

I haven't seen "Lohan: Fully Loaded," but I'll give "Cars" a grey area pass. My issue is more with the car films where the "good guys" commit crimes beyond how they drive (robbery, assault, etc).

Just bikes tho.

Lightning attempts to escape from the police while he is in custody. That one, for me, is a big no no.
Lindsey, if I recall correctly, was a "recovering" street racer.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:19 |

Exactly why I said "major theater releases." Otherwise the list could be filled with things like Senna, Love the Beast, Dust to Glory, etc. I do love that though
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:20 |

Yeah that's why I didn't mention it earlier. But I just had to bring it up.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:20 |

Oooh. Now there's a good call. Did it get a full theater release or was it "select theaters?" If full I'll totally allow it.

Fair enough
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:22 |

Pretty sure it was a full release. I remember seeing TV commercials for it.

Grey area, but I'll allow it

He does get nailed for speeding in the movie.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:34 |

Driven was a crime in and of itself ;) but I think you're right (I've only seen pieces of it)
Love the Beast wasn't released in mainstream theaters
Speed's a bit of a grey area (took place on a bus, yes, but there aren't any "car people" per se, which is where my frustration lies: the portrayal of car people)
I'll give you Talladega Nights
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:34 |

Suggestion by proxy: Talladega Nights. The only question is if the cougar was legal, and he does some aggressive driving on the public streets with the cougar in the car.

Yeah, but I'm willing to overlook that one.

![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:37 |

Well, it's not a felony, but in Driven, Sly and that other dude drive Indy cars recklessly on public roads.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:40 |
|
Right. I'm not debating that, I'm saying the reason I'm frustrated with Hollywood (and the reason I started this discussion) is that it seems like they always have "car people" committing some form of crimes (and often specifically crimes beyond their antics behind the wheel). Speed is a grey area because despite it taking place almost entirely in a moving vehicle I'm not sure I can really say there were any "car people" in the film.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:41 |

Ya sorry, for some reason I crossed the points you made about driven and speed.

Misdemeanor in Florida. Not a felony!

Fair enough, but I think it's 'illegal' enough for the spirit of this discussion.

Isn't there a scene in Rush that shows James Hunt doing cocaine?

Born to Race. I don't think he committed any felonies. Just wrecked his sponsored drag strip ride during a street race.
